Under minimal supervision performs complex set ups and operate conventional, special purpose or numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Under minimal supervision performs the following duties:
- Interprets blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements. Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
- Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
- Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
- Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
- Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.
- Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
- Must maintain a clean and efficient work station while maintaining safety standards and production efficiency levels.
- Keep machine tools clean and in good working order.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous experience in machine shop processes of CNC or conventional applications. Specific tool sharpening abilities is required. Ability to apply concepts of basic math and trigonometry. Ability to read and interpret blueprint drawings. Experience with basic set up and control based programming. Ability to perform first article inspections using precision measuring and gauging instruments on parts being machined or fabricated. General understanding of the entire machining/manufacturing process.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
HS diploma or GED certificate and minimum of 5+ years of technical experience in a manufacturing environment and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience; Or educational equivalent of two year certificate from college or technical training school and 3+ years of technical experience in a manufacturing environment and/or training.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply concepts of basic math and trigonometry.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee primarily stands to perform work and required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and or move up to 25lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Majority of work is performed in a normal plant/workshop environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. Noise level is consistent with a machine shop which is usually moderate. Proper safety training and equipment is provided to employee for the safe performance of required duties.
